The Washington Capitals had a complete team win on Wednesday night and they’ll look to do the same on Saturday night against the back to back Stanley Cup champion Tampa Bay Lightning. The Caps won 5-1 over the New York Rangers on Wednesday and tonight marks the middle of their season opening three game homestand.

The Caps got contributions up and down their lineup from players young and old. Alex Ovechkin scored twice to get past Marcel Dionne for fifth place in the NHL’s all time goal scoring list. Hendrix Lapierre made his NHL debut and scored his first NHL goal. The Caps got four goals on special teams including three on the power play. Vitek Vanecek stopped 23 of 24 shots.

The Lightning opened their season against the Pittsburgh Penguins but their banner night got spoiled with a 6-2 win by the road team. The Bolts bounced back in dramatic fashion on the road against the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday night. Down 6-3, the Bolts scored four unanswered goals including a game winner in overtime from Ondrej Palat.

This is the first time the Caps have played the Lightning since the return to play round robin in the Toronto bubble. That was a 3-2 shootout loss and it was the beginning of the Lightning’s road to two straight Stanley Cups.
