The Washington Capitals return home to take on the Detroit Red Wings at Capital One Arena for the first time since Dec. 11, 2018. They were supposed to meet in March 2020 in D.C. until the sports world including the NHL shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Sadly we won’t see the return of Jakub Vrana as he’s dealing with an injury he suffered at training camp but perhaps we could see a big game from Anthony Mantha.

Mantha will play his first contest against the Red Wings since being traded from there to the Caps in April. The Red Wings selected Mantha in the 2013 NHL Draft. The Caps actually have three former Red Wings on their roster which includes Mantha, Nick Jensen, and Dennis Cholowski.

Evgeny Kuznetsov is three points shy of passing Scott Stevens for 12th on the Capitals franchise points list and is six assists shy of 300 career assists. Meanwhile, Alex Ovechkin is five goals away from passing Brett Hull (741 goals) for fourth place on the NHL’s all time goal scoring list.

This is Washington’s first game against Detroit since Nov. 30, 2019 which was a 5-2 win at Little Caesars Arena that featured an Ovechkin hat trick. The Caps have earned a point in 12 straight games against the Red Wings with a 10-0-2 record dating back to Nov. 18, 2015.

Some interesting things happened today at morning skate. These were the initial lines:

Ovechkin-Kuznetsov-Wilson
Mantha-McMichael-Oshie
Hagelin-Eller-Hathaway
Sheary-Lapierre-Sprong

Fehervary-Carlson
Orlov-Jensen
TvR-Schultz

Vitek Vanecek is starting in goal. Nic Dowd (lower body) was skating too. Daniel Sprong then started to skate with the scratches. This means Dowd is likely in and Connor McMichael could move to wing. Sprong played a team low 7:42 the other night against the Ottawa Senators including just 58 seconds in the final period. Stay tuned! Oh and if you’re going to the game, lucky you, you get a Tom Wilson bobblehead.
