The Washington Capitals are back home and will be rocking the blue W third alternate jerseys tonight against the Philadelphia Flyers. The Caps are coming off two losses in their Florida road trip but they still got a point out of their last game as a comeback would force overtime.

Nicklas Backstrom was on the ice this morning before the morning skate, skating with Caps conditioning coach Mark Nemish. Although today is the earliest he can come off long term injured reserve or LTIR, he’s not coming off the list just yet.

Recently Tarik El-Bashir of The Athletic sat down with Brian MacLellan for a Q and A (subscription required). GMBM explained that the Caps are taking a cautious approach.

"“We’re being cautious here. We have a good plan and we’re going to make sure he’s at the right place at the right time.”"

Tonight is the start of a two game homestand for the Caps. Captain Alex Ovechkin enters tonight’s game two goals shy of passing Brett Hull (741 goals) for fourth place on the NHL’s all time goals list. He’s also two assists shy of 600 career assists. He would be the ninth active player to reach that mark.

Additionally, Evgeny Kuznetsov is one point shy from passing Dennis Maruk for 11th place on the Caps all time franchise points list. He’s also three assists shy of 300 career assists. The Caps have recorded a point in nine of their first 10 games for the second straight season, posting a 5-1-4 record. The Caps are also undefeated at home in regulation with a 3-0-3 record.

Last season in the MassMutual East Division, the Caps went 6-2-0 against the Flyers with Ovechkin leading the way with 12 points with eight goals and four assists in six games.
