The Washington Capitals face the Detroit Red Wings tonight for the second time this season. This is the first of a two game, back to back for the Capitals with the next game coming Friday night against the Columbus Blue Jackets. The Caps are 6-2-4 with 16 points, good for third in the Metropolitan Division. The Caps lost the previous meeting to the Red Wings, 3-2 in a shootout on Oct. 27 at Capital One Arena.
This game marks Washington’s first visit to Little Caesars Arena since Nov. 30, 2019, a game that the Caps won 5-2 behind a hat trick from Alex Ovechkin. The Capitals have earned a point in 13 straight games against the Red Wings with a 10-0-3 record, dating back to Nov. 18, 2015. During that span, Ovechkin leads the team with 11 goals in 13 games, while both Nicklas Backstrom and Evgeny Kuznetsov are tied for the team lead with 11 assists.
Backstrom is still sidelined and the Caps are still without T.J. Oshie, Anthony Mantha, and now Nic Dowd. The Caps sent Hendrix Lapierre back to juniors to continue his development. The Caps recalled forward Aliaksei Protas and goaltender Zach Fucale from the Hershey Bears. The Caps are also traveling with three goaltenders on the trip as Vitek Vanecek might be banged up, twitter jokes or not.
John Carlson has bounced back nicely after one of our writers criticized him. He’s on a five game point streak with two goals and four assists. Connor McMichael has also heated up with a three game point streak with two goals and an assist. Ovechkin, meanwhile, just needs one goal tonight to pass Brett Hull for fourth place on the NHL’s all time scoring list.
Can the Caps get revenge in Detroit and can Ovechkin continue his historic chase, here’s how to find out:
