After falling short in overtime last night to the Anaheim Ducks, the Washington Capitals look to bounce back tonight against the Los Angeles Kings in the second leg of the first of two road west coast back to backs.
Congrats to Trevor Van Riemsdyk, who skated in his 400th career game last night. And a big congrats to Garrett Pilon for scoring his first career NHL goal. Alex Ovechkin is one assist shy of passing Pavel Datsyuk for the fourth most assists by a Russian born player.
Tonight marks the first game the Caps have played against the Kings since Feb. 4, 2020, a 4-2 win at Capital One Arena behind an Ovechkin natural hat trick on his chase to 700 goals. The Caps have won four straight against the Kings dating back to Feb. 11, 2019, outscoring Los Angeles 16-9 during that stretch. The Caps are 1-0-0 in the second half of back to backs this season.
Six different rookies played for the Caps last night against the Ducks (Martin Fehervary, Connor McMichael, Brett Leason, Axel Jonsson-Fjallby, Aliaksei Protas, and Pilon), marking the first time the Capitals have played with six rookies in their lineup since Jan. 16, 2011. That rookie class back then included John Carlson, Jay Beagle, Andrew Gordon, Marcus Johansson, Michal Neuvirth, and Mathieu Perrault.
With his goal last night, Pilon became the fifth different player to score his first career goal for the Capitals this season, joining McMichael, Leason, Fehervary, and Hendrix Lapierre.
