The Washington Capitals may be getting Nicklas Backstrom back tonight. We should know at their morning skate which takes place at 12:30 eastern, 11:30 central. He practiced once again yesterday before the team departed to Chicago for their game tonight against the Blackhawks. It’ll be a game where the Caps will be looking for payback.

The Caps lost to the Blackhawks in their first game of December 4-3 in a shootout. They’ve been shaky as they’ve dealt with injuries and a COVID outbreak but are coming off a 3-2 shootout win over the Buffalo Sabres.

Tom Wilson wasn’t at practice Tuesday as he’s still day to day with an upper body injury. Garnet Hathaway is still in COVID protocol so he didn’t practice either. Here were the lines via Samantha Pell of The Washington Post:

Ovechkin-Kuznetsov-Protas
Sheary-Backstrom-Oshie
McMichael-Eller-Sprong
Hagelin-Dowd-Malenstyn

Fehervary-Carlson
Orlov-Jensen
TvR-Scultz

Backstrom once again took rushes on the second line for the second day in a row alongside Conor Sheary and T.J. Oshie. Wilson skated earlier by himself and made the trip.

Backstrom is traveling to Chicago and we’ll see how he feels after today’s morning skate. Nic Dowd and Trevor Van Riemsdyk are also traveling to Chicago and are expected to play tonight. They are out of COVID protocols. However, they will not be available in Friday’s game at the Winnipeg Jets because of Canada’s COVID and quarantine rules.
