The Washington Capitals are traveling to Winnipeg today to take on the Jets. Some players though will not be joining them. Nic Dowd and Trevor van Riemsdyk, although out of COVID protocol, will not travel with them due to Canada’s COVID-19 restrictions. They’re designated as non roster. Brett Leason, who was sent back to Hershey for a paper transaction, has been called right back up.
Alex Ovechkin scored his 274th career power play goal the other night in the Caps eventual overtime loss to the Chicago Blackhawks, which tied him with Dave Andreychuk for the most power play goals in NHL history. He needs just one more to be first all time.
But that’s not the only milestone Ovechkin is after. He is additionally one game winning goal away from passing Phil Esposito (118 goals) for the third most game winning goals in NHL history. But let’s do it in regulation shall we?
John Carlson is also one point shy of passing Mike Ridley (547) for eighth on the franchise points list. Evgeny Kuznetsov, who the Caps will be without since he entered COVID protocols, went back to Washington to quarantine.
The Caps practiced yesterday in Chicago and did some more rounds of COVID testing. Tom Wilson was on the ice in a no contact jersey. He’s still day to day with an upper body injury. Dowd and TvR headed back to D.C.
Tonight marks the first time the Caps have faced the Jets this season and their first meeting since Feb. 27, 2020. The Caps have earned points in six of their last eight games against the Jets, posting a 5-2-1 record.
