It is the first Washington Capitals game of 2022! Today the Capitals will host the New Jersey Devils in their second game this season. The Caps won the previous meeting on the road 4-1 just days into the new season. They also swept the season series last year against the Devils.

The Caps ended 2021 on a high note thanks to their captain Alex Ovechkin. He concluded the year by climbing three of the NHL’s all time lists. He scored his 275th power play goal which is the most by any player in NHL history. He also added his 119th game winner and 154th multi goal game en route to a 3-1 win over the Detroit Red Wings.

With 2:51 left in regulation, Ovechkin struck from downtown for the game winner. It was the 119th GWG and it passed Phil Esposito for the third most game winners in NHL history which trails just Jaromir Jagr (135) and Gordie Howe (118). His 154th multi goal game tied Mario Lemieux for the third most in NHL history behind Wayne Gretzky (189) and Brett Hull (158).

The Caps ended 2021 tied with the Tampa Bay Lightning with 47 points to lead the NHL. The Caps have a plus 31 goal differential that leads the league.

The Caps held a practice today and it looks like more reinforcements will arrive. The following players on Saturday were cleared for practice but still have COVID protocol: Daniel Sprong, Justin Schultz, Vitek Vanecek, Dennis Cholowski, and Nick Jensen. Martin Fehervary is still out. As is Lars Eller with a non COVID illness and Matt Irwin for personal reasons. Alex Ovechkin, John Carlson, and Evgeny Kuznetsov were each absent as they took maintenance days.

Sprong, Schultz, Vanecek, Jensen and Cholowski appear to be back in the mix for the lineup as they came off the COVID list after practice.
