#1 Fix the power play

The number one New Year’s resolution for the Capitals is an obvious one, fix their league worst power play. How bad is it? They should be lucky Alex Ovechkin scored last night to be all alone in power play goals all time.

The Caps are ranked 28th in the NHL on the man advantage. They have a success rate of 15.2 percent. The Caps finished one for three on the power play last night against the Detroit Red Wings with their third time being the charm. The Red Wings finished 0 for 3 and their power play attack is not much better than the Caps.

It was even worse the previous two games as the Caps were a combined 0 for 12 against the Los Angles Kings and the Nashville Predators, 0 for 6 each time. They even had a stretch of up to six games without a single power play goal.

Maybe Ovechkin’s PPG gets them going in the right direction but it’s too early to tell. After all, it’s only Jan. 1. But I’d say as far as the units go, keep the first unit intact and add Connor McMichael to the mix on the second unit. Put him in for Aliaksei Protas.
