#2 Alex Ovechkin will pass Jaromir Jagr

Alex Ovechkin leads the Caps with 24 goals and 26 assists for 50 points in 34 games. He’s got 754 goals in his career, needing just 13 to pass Jaromir Jagr to be all alone in third place in the NHL’s all time goals list. It is very doable.

How doable is this for the Great Eight? Let’s break down how many goals he scored month by month. In the month of October, Ovechkin had nine goals. In November, that number went up to 10. In December that number dropped down to five but keep in mind there was also a couple of games that were postponed. So far this month, that’s only been one game which would have taken place last night in Montreal.

12 years ago today, Ovechkin was named team captain of the Capitals. He was the first European born captain in franchise history and is the Caps longest tenured captain. He’s a franchise record holder in games played (1,231), goals (754), points (1,370), power play goals (275), power play points (510), overtime goals (24), and shots (5,886).

The Capitals hold a record of 535-263-106 with Ovechkin as captain, the most points (1,176) and tied for the most wins in the NHL. During that stretch, the Capitals have won eight division titles, three Presidents’ Trophies, one conference title and the Stanley Cup.
