The Caps held a morning skate today at MedStar Capitals Iceplex with a mix of both good and bad news. Nicklas Backstrom and T.J. Oshie were on the ice after missing time due to a non COVID illness. The three goalies were on the ice, with Zach Fucale getting the start tonight and Vitek Vanecek backing him up. Now to the bad news, defenseman Dmitry Orlov was placed in COVID protocols.
The reason for Ilya Samsonov being a healthy scratch has nothing to do with his performance. It’s rather a chance to get Vanecek back in as he recovered from a non COVID illness and was in COVID protocols prior to that illness.
