The Washington Capitals are back in action as they look to snap a four game losing streak and get their first win of 2022. They’ll take on the New York Islanders in their brand new UBS Arena.
The Caps game against the Islanders is the beginning of their second straight weekend back to back. They’ll return home the next day to face the Vancouver Canucks. The Caps had not only played back to backs over the last weekend but also had three games in four nights. Their games against the St. Louis Blues and Boston Bruins were so bad I’m not sure which one was worse. But I’d go with the Bruins.
In that game the Caps had a 2-0 lead before the Bruins piled on goal after goal in a 7-3 stomping. They scored six straight goals. The Caps had an intense practice Tuesday, a day off Wednesday and practiced on Thursday and Friday.
The Caps were supposed to face the Islanders on Dec. 23rd but COVID-19 had other ideas. That game will likely be made up during the period in February where the NHL was supposed to go to the Olympics. They aren’t.
The Caps will be without Dmitry Orlov and Carl Hagelin due to COVID protocol. Only John Carlson and Alex Ovechkin have appeared in every game this season. The Caps are 6-2-1 in the Metropolitan Division but are 0-1-1 in their last two games. They come into this weekend 0-2-2 in their last four.
The Islanders meanwhile are on a three game winning streak in their return to action after a COVID outbreak of their own. They recently beat the New Jersey Devils at home 3-2. They’ll host the Philadelphia Flyers after the Caps on Monday and Tuesday. Their coach Barry Trotz is in COVID protocol.
