The Washington Capitals finally won their first game of 2022 yesterday against the New York Islanders on the road. They hope to continue the positive momentum at home against the Vancouver Canucks. This is the first meeting between the two teams this season and their first meeting since Nov. 23, 2019 where the Caps lost 2-1 in the shootout.

The Caps defeated the Islanders 2-0 behind a goal from Tom Wilson, an empty net from Alex Ovechkin and a shutout performance by Vitek Vanecek. Ovechkin’s goal marked his 25th of the season which ranks second in the NHL. Vanecek stopped all 23 shots he faced.

Although the Canucks are seventh in the Pacific Division, they have turned things around nicely ever since former Capitals bench boss Bruce Boudreau took over. Last month they won seven in row. They come into this afternoon’s game however with three straight losses including a 4-1 defeat yesterday to the Carolina Hurricanes.

Today is the Capitals sixth set of back to back games. The Caps hold a 6-3-2 record in back to back games this season, a 3-1-1 record in the second half of back to backs and a 2-1-0 record following a win in their first game.

The Caps haven’t had two consecutive regulation losses in 54 consecutive games, a streak that began on April 9, 2021, the third longest such streak in franchise history. The Caps are 5-0-3 in games following regulation losses this season, outscoring opponents 27-21 in games following a loss. The Caps have scored first in 27 of their 38 games.
