#2 Daniel Sprong

This one pains me because I like the kid. Daniel Sprong is a stud but he isn’t getting enough playing time and does get scratched here and there. It may just be that Coach Peter Laviolette doesn’t like him enough to give him the opportunities he deserves. Unfortunately I see this situation playing out like the Jakub Vrana situation and that trade caught everyone by surprise.

Sprong has six goals and five assists for 11 points in 34 games. He averages 12:56 minutes of ice time. Per the lovely CapFriendly.com, Sprong has a cap hit of $725K which would be a bargain for any potential suitors. He’s a restricted free agent this summer.

Sprong was scoreless in his last five games. At morning skate today at MedStar Capitals Iceplex it looked to be like Sprong once again was a healthy scratch. All six of Sprong’s goals came at even strength which is even more of a reason why he shouldn’t be getting power play time and Connor McMichael should be.

The question is do the Caps go with a forward in their lineup that they could count on? And what kind of a return could they get for Sprong? And they have to get it right. Who knows if the trade for Anthony Mantha worked out yet. Both are hurt. It’s important that the Caps get this right if they look to upgrade their forward depth.
