The Washington Capitals will look to bounce back from a loss the other night to the Boston Bruins as they take on the Ottawa Senators tonight at Capital One Arena. The Caps won the first matchup 7-5 in Ottawa on Oct. 25, 2021 behind a T.J. Oshie hat trick. Alex Ovechkin had two goals in that game and has 53 points in his career against the Senators with 33 goals and 20 assists in 49 career games.
Ovechkin also has 13 points with 10 goals and three assists in his last 11 games and four straight multi point efforts in his most recent four games played with six goals and two assists. No active player in The NHL has more goals against Ottawa than Ovechkin.
The Caps held an optional practice on Friday. The team re-assigned Axel Jonsson-Fjallby to the Hershey Bears. Conor Sheary was on the ice. Coach Peter Laviolette said after practice that there is no update yet on Nick Jensen who left the game the night before.
Laviolette also noted that John Carlson is technically able to come off the protocol on Saturday but is unsure of his status as there’s several more hurdles he has to clear. Laviolette was also unsure if Sheary was going to play against the Senators.
The Caps loss the other night dropped their record to 22-10-9 with 53 points, good for fourth in the Metropolitan Division and first in the Wild Card. The Senators have struggled this season with an 11-20-2 record with 24 points, seventh place in the Atlantic Division. They are coming off a 6-4 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Ovechkin (three goals and three assists) and Evgeny Kuznetsov (two goals, five assists) are each on six game point streaks. Tom Wilson is on a four game point streak with three goals and two assists as well as a two game assist streak. Lars Eller is on a two game point streak with a goal and an assist as is Connor McMichael with two assists. That’s also a two game assist streak.
