After stealing a game in overtime last night on the road against the Pittsburgh Penguins, the Washington Capitals return home to face the Edmonton Oilers in front of a national TV audience. Those that wanted to see Alex Ovechkin and Connor McDavid tonight will be disappointed because as we’re writing this we just found out Ovi entered COVID protocol and will not play tonight nor participate in the All Star Game.
Ovechkin, up until this point, was the only Caps player that had not missed any games this season. That changes and now we’ll have to see what the Caps do with the top line. There was no morning skate today with this being the second of a back to back. TheCaps reassigned goaltender Pheonix Copley from the Hershey Bears to the taxi squad, a move that suggests Vitek Vanecek could miss time after last night’s collision. They also recalled Copley as well as Brett Leason from the taxi squad while Hunter Shepard got reassigned to the Bears.
In last night’s game against the Penguins, Dmitry Orlov had two goals including the game winner in overtime. It was his first overtime goal this season and third of his career. His four game winning goals are tied with Tom Wilson for the most on the Capitals this season while ranking third among defensemen.
This occasion also marked Orlov’s fourth career multi goal game and first since Nov. 13, 2018 against the Minnesota Wild. With seven goals and 22 points in 42 games, Orlov is on pace to finish the season with 12 goals and 39 points, both of which would be career highs for the 10 year veteran defenseman.
Can the Caps win tonight without Ovi? Here’s how to find out. We’ll have more on this latest development later.
