Tonight the Washington Capitals will take on the Montreal Canadiens for the second time this season. The Caps won the previous matchup 6-3 on Nov. 24, 2021 at Capital One Arena. The team has earned points in 17 of their last 18 games at the Bell Centre going 15-1-2, a stretch that began on Nov. 28, 2009.
The Caps will be without Alex Ovechkin due to Canada’s COVID restrictions. They recalled Brett Leason from the Hershey Bears. The team held a practice at MedStar Capitals Iceplex. Vitek Vanecek was not present (injured reserve, upper body). Ilya Samsonov and Pheonix Copley were the two goalies on the ice. Evgeny Kuznetsov took a maintenance day.
Anthony Mantha had shoulder surgery in early November but prior to practice took the ice for the first time. Capitals Coach Peter Laviolette said there’s hope that Mantha could play prior to the playoffs. He’s currently on long term injured reserve. Laviolette, however, did note that he has a “long road” ahead and no timetable.
“His focus is just on getting healthy,” said Laviolette.
In other news Dennis Cholowski got claimed from the Seattle Kraken. The defenseman had one assist in seven games. The Caps originally claimed him off waivers from the Kraken shortly after the season began.
