Capitals get the job done against Flyers

The Washington Capitals continued their road dominance with a third period 5-3 comeback win over the Philadelphia Flyers before their week long break in between game action.

The Caps struck first at 18:35 in the opening period on a shot from Michal Kempny from downtown for his first goal of the season. It was assisted by the podcast bros Nic Dowd and Garnet Hathaway. 1-0 was the score after one as the Flyers led in shots 11-8.

At 8:54 the Flyers tied it on a power play goal by Gerry Mayhew. The Caps answered at 12:49 with a power play goal of their own from Joe Snively as he followed his own rebound for his fourth goal of the season. Conor Sheary and Dmitry Orlov assisted on the Herndon kid’s goal.

Travis Sanheim tied it back up at 19:01 as 2-2 was the score after two. The Flyers led in shots 12-6 in the second. At 16:09 of the third, Mayhew scored his second goal of the game to put the Flyers ahead but the Caps wouldn’t give up.

At 17:03 Garnet Hathaway rebounded in a shot from John Carlson for his ninth goal of the season. Carl Hagelin had the secondary assist. Hathaway scored again off a nifty backhanded pass from Hagelin behind the net. Hathaway crashed the net up front for his 10th of the season.

Carlson would put a wrap on this game in the McNugget minute as he scored at 19:11 for his 10th of the season. It was assisted by Dowd. The Caps led in shots 11-10 in the third while the Flyers led overall 33-25. Ilya Samsonov made 30 saves for a .909 save percentage.

Carlson told reporters after the game:

"“These are big points for us right now and I mean everything is not going as smoothly as we all hope but through those times where you don’t feel like you got you’re A game, to come away with wins is just as important.”"

When the Caps return to game action it’ll be on Thursday on the road against the New York Rangers before a Saturday rematch in Philly.
