The Washington Capitals have won two in a row and will now hit the road for a Canada trip. The first stop is in Calgary against a talented Flames team that beat the Caps 4-3 in overtime back on Oct. 23, 2021. They also beat the Edmonton Oilers last night on home ice.
Alex Ovechkin has 12 points with four goals and eight assists in his last 11 games against Calgary and 27 points in 20 career games against the Flames with 12 goals and 15 assists. Ovechkin is three goals shy of passing Jaromir Jagr (766 goals) for the third most goals in NHL history.
He’s also three game winning goals shy of passing Gordie Howe (121) for the second most in NHL history. Ovechkin is on a three game point streak with two goals and three assists and has scored goals in two straight games.
Ovechkin is eighth in the NHL with 68 points and fourth in goals with 34. He needed to average 33 over his five seasons since signing the contract. Year one can be checked off.
Tonight will mark the 1,000th game played with both Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom in the lineup. They’re the first set of Capitals teammates to play in 1,000 games together. They’ll be the ninth set of teammates to accomplish this feat in NHL history. There’s only one other active duo still playing on the same team with 1,000 games played together: Los Angels Kings Anze Kopitar and Dustin Brown.
Ovechkin and Backstrom played together for the first time on Oct. 5, 2007 against the Atlanta Thrashers, winning 3-1 with each player recording an assist. Backstrom has assisted on 274 of Ovechkin’s career goals which is 35.9 percent of his total goals. Ovechkin has assisted on 106 of Backstrom’s career goals which is 40.5 percent. Backstrom has assisted on 117 of Ovechkin’s NHL record 279 career power play goals which is 41.9 percent.
