The Washington Capitals host the Dallas Stars this evening at 5 p.m. in what was supposed to be the homecoming for Braden Holtby. Sadly he’s hurt but hopefully he’s still in D.C. and the Caps will find some way to pay tribute to the former goaltender.

The last time these teams met was on Jan. 28 in a 5-0 Caps win in Big D behind a 29 save performance from Vitek Vanecek. It marked the largest margin of victory in a shutout effort the Caps have had against the Stars in franchise history.

The Caps have earned points in seven straight games against Dallas, dating back to Dec. 19, 2017. The Caps are 4-0-3 in that stretch. Alex Ovechkin has recorded 16 points in 21 career games against the Stars with 10 goals and six assists. He has also earned a point in seven of his last 12 games with six goals and five assists. Nicklas Backstrom has earned 22 points with six goals and 16 assists in 19 career games against the Stars including 18 points in his last 13 games with six goals and 12 assists.

Ovechkin scored his 39th goal of the season Friday night in a comeback win on the road against the Carolina Hurricanes. He’s now one goal shy of becoming he sixth player in NHL history to score 40 or more goals at age 36 or older and would reach the mark for the 12th time in his career, which would tie Wayne Gretzky for the most in NHL history.

The Caps have been red hot this month with a 7-0-1 record and are the only NHL team without a regulation loss in March. The Capitals current eight game point streak is tied for Washington’s longest streak of the season and first since the very beginning of the season when they got off to that hot start.

They’ll hope to continue the momentum tonight in front of the home crowd. Here’s how to watch and place your bets.
