The Washington Capitals will kick off a back to back set of weekend games. First up is a road contest against the Buffalo Sabres tonight then tomorrow night they return home to host the New Jersey Devils. It also is the third and final game between the Caps and Sabres this season.

The Caps come in having lost two straight games which is a rarity in a month of March that has otherwise seen them hot. Their latest setback was a 5-2 loss to the St. Louis Blues at Capital One Arena. It was a game where they somewhat showed up in the first period but that was it. They were outplayed.

In the final 40 minutes of that game, the Caps offense was held to just eight shots on net. Their defense was bad. Goaltending? Well you know.

Only once this season have the Caps lost three games in a row in regulation. They’ll host the Carolina Hurricanes Monday night in their third game in four night. The Caps geared up with a space in between games with a full practice Wednesday and an optional practice on Thursday. They also held a morning skate today.

Yesterday Garnet Hathaway got fined for $2,000 under NHL 64 (diving/embellishment). While he was issued a warning in late February, the $2K fine was the result of an incident involving Hathaway against Carolina on March 18.

The Caps will go with a regular lineup tonight after rolling with 11 forwards and seven defenseman in Tuesday’s loss to the Blues. T.J. Oshie continued to skate with extras. Nic Dowd took rushes centering the fourth line, so he appears to be back. Matt Irwin is in for Michal Kempny on defense with the team still missing Trevor van Riemsdyk. Ilya Samsonov starts in goal tonight.
