The Washington Capitals have signed forward Mike Vecchione to a one year, two way contract where he’ll make $750,000 in the NHL and $275,000 in the AHL.
The 29 year old is tied for first on the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League this season with 38 points with 13 goals and 25 assists. His 25 assists lead the team. The five foot 10, 193 pound forward is just two points shy of tying his AHL career high points in a season. He recorded 40 points in 2018-19.
Vecchione appeared in one game for the Capitals this season and has played a total of three NHL games. He is a native of Saugus, Massachusetts.
Last season Vecchione recorded 10 points with seven goals and three assists in 18 games with the Colorado Eagles of the AHL last season, tying for the third most goals on the team. He entered the 2020-21 season with three consecutive AHL seasons with at least 36 points including a career high of 40 points (17 goals and 23 assists) as a member of the Lehigh Valley Phantoms in 2017-18.
Vecchione originally signed with the Philadelphia Flyers on March 31, 2017 following four seasons at Union College where he recorded 176 points in 149 NCAA games with 71 goals and 105 assists. He served as team captain for his junior and senior seasons.
In 257 career AHL games between Hershey, Lehigh Valley, the San Antonio Rampage, and Colorado, Vecchione has recorded 162 points with 73 goals and 89 assists.
Mike Vecchione has played in just one game for the Capitals this season. That game occurred on March 18 at the Carolina Hurricanes in a. win. He was a -1 as he played 5:06. It’s a tiny sample size but his Corsi For percentage per Natural Stat Trick is at 50 percent. His Expected Goals For percentage is at 74.08 percent. And his High Danger Chances For percentage is at 75 percent. Not bad for barley playing five minutes.
