Tonight the Washington Capitals and Carolina Hurricanes square off for the fourth and final time of the regular season. Despite the Hurricanes being first in the Metropolitan Division with a 43-15-7 record for 93 points, the Caps have won the first three matchups by a combined score of 12-5. They met earlier in the month and a dominating Caps win helped jump start their hot month where they’ve only dropped two games.

Alex Ovechkin has recorded 98 points in 84 career games against the Hurricanes with 46 goals and 52 assists. Whether it was the Metro or Southeast Division, the Caps were always seeing the Hurricanes. Ovechkin’s 98 points against the Canes are the most he’s had against a single franchise.

John Carlson is expected to suit up in his 873rd game tonight. That would pass Dale Hunter for the sixth most games played in NHL history. He’s been hot since early February recording 22 points in his last 22 games with two goals and 20 assists. In that stretch that’s good for third among defensemen in points, trailing only Roman Josi of the Nashville Predators and Cale Makar of the Colorado Avalanche.

The Caps enter their second of a four game homestand. They also met the Canes for the third time in the last 26 nights. That homestand kicked off in epic fashion on Saturday night as the Caps honored Nicklas Backstrom for 1,000 points. Backstrom would score and fans threw their apple giveaways onto the ice in a win over the New Jersey Devils.

In that win over the Devils it was ignited by a three goal comeback. Backstrom’s late goal gave the Caps the lead and Ovechkin made sure it stayed that way. Now they look to sweep the first place bunch of jerks. Every point matters the rest of the way.
