Alex Ovechkin has 42 goals this season and it’ll be only a matter of time before the Washington Capitals captain reaches 50. His 42 goals are fourth in the league. Auston Matthews of the Toronto Maple Leafs has already reached 50. Good for him.
But the biggest question facing the great eight is how many goals will he finish with at the end of the month which also signifies the end of the regular season?
Let’s break things down month by month. Keep in mind Ovechkin missed a few games in February due to COVID protocol.
Ovechkin got off to a hot start in the season with nine goals in eight games in the month of October. In November he had 10 goals in 15 games. He cooled off a bit in December with five goals in 10 games. He had another five goal month in 12 games in January. He only had three goals in February in eight games.
He then got really hot in March as the team got hotter. 10 goals in 13 games and passing Jaromir Jagr for third all time in NHL history in goals scored. Only Gordie Howe and Wayne Gretzky left to chase. Which brings us to April. How many goals can Ovechkin finish the season with?
The Caps have 14 games in April to close out the regular season. Sitting at 42 goals at the beginning of April, it’s not a question of if Ovechkin can score 50 goals but when. If he carries over his March momentum into this month, he could reach the 50 goal plateau by mid April.
Mid April puts the Caps in a five game road trip with three of those matchups being tough ones. These are the kinds of games Ovechkin will get up for. But if you want me to put a number on it, here it is… Alex Ovechkin will finish the season with 54 goals.
12 goals in the month of April is very doable. Especially after a 10 goal performance in 13 games in March. But when Ovechkin does hit 50 it will show that he has shown no signs of slowing down and that he’s on Gordie Howe and Wayne Gretzky’s tail.
