After a thrilling and badly needed win the other night, the Washington Capitals begin a weekend back to back against two playoff teams. First up is the Pittsburgh Penguins in enemy territory.

The Caps got an epic 4-3 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning on Wednesday night. John Carlson scored twice and would’ve probably had a hat trick had one of those shots in the net hadn’t been taken away. Martin Fehervary and Alex Ovechkin also scored and Ilya Samsonov shut the door down making some key saves down the stretch.

The Caps are 38-22-10 with 86 points and are trying to gain ground on the Lightning. The Penguins are third in the Metropolitan Division with a 41-21-10 record with 92 points. They have also struggled lately as they have lost three in a row. They last played on Thursday which was a 3-0 shutout to the New York Rangers.

Carlson recorded the third four point game of his career on Wednesday with two goals and two assists. It was also his second this season and the first time since Dec. 29 against the Nashville Predators. He’s just the seventh defenseman in franchise history to record three four point games and the first since Mike Green, who accomplished this feat on Oct. 22, 2011 against the Detroit Red Wings.

Carlson ranks seventh among defensemen in points with 59 (13 goals, 46 assists), and tied for fifth with 13 goals. He enters today’s game against Pittsburgh one point shy of recording 60 points for the fourth time in his career. That would tie Scott Stevens for the most 60 point seasons in franchise history.
