Capitals stomp the Flyers

The Washington Capitals scored a season high nine goals in a 9-2 takedown over the Philadelphia Flyers. It was their second win against the Flyers as the teams split the season series and it was an important two points as the Caps won their fourth in a row to move up closer to third place in the Metropolitan Division.

The scoring was started at 6:01 from none other than Alex Ovechkin as he followed his own rebound for his 46th goal of the season. The assists came from Conor Sheary and Evgeny Kuznetsov.

At 11:24 the Caps doubled their lead as T.J. Oshie lurked by the net for an easy layup for his ninth goal of the season. John Carlson and Nicklas Backstrom had the helpers.

The Flyers got on the board at the 12 minute mark with a goal from James van Riemsdyk. The Caps answered at 13:16 from Martin Fehervary for his eighth goal of the season as he did some nice stick work before finishing off with a backhand shot. It was assisted by Nic Dowd and Garnet Hathaway.

3-1 was the score after the first 20 minutes. The Caps led in shots 10-8.

At 6:39 in the second period, Lars Eller finished off a cross ice pass from Anthony Mantha with Tom Wilson providing the secondary assist. At 15:30 Conor Sheary had a backhander of his own with a deke that totally faked out Martin Jones before he backhanded it in for his 17th goal of the season. Kuznetsov and Ovechkin had the assists.

The Caps took a 5-1 lead into the second intermission and led in shots 14-7 in the second period.

At 3:31 the Caps added to their lead with a shot from downtown from Matt Irwin for his first goal as a Capital. It was assisted by Justin Schultz and Johan Larsson. Eller then added his second goal of the game and 12th of the season with a breakaway that was assisted by Mantha and Trevor van Riemsdyk.

At 12:42 Hathaway deflected in a shot from Schultz for his career high 12th goal of the season. Irwin had the secondary. James van Riemsdyk then added his second goal of the game at 16:26 on the power play.

Finally the Caps would put a bow on the game with a power play goal from Larsson for his seventh goal of the season and first as a Capital. It came at 17:32 on a deflection off another Schultz shot with Dowd proving the secondary assist.
