After a successful season long five game road trip, the Washington Capitals return home looking to avenge their only regulation loss from said trip. They host the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Caps went 3-1-1 on the road trip.

Among active players in the NHL, Alex Ovechkin ranks first with 41 goals and 74 points against the Maple Leafs despite never playing in the same division as Toronto. Ovechkin’s 0.79 goals per game rate against the Maple Leafs is the highest rate he has against any Eastern Conference team. There’s 18 combined 50 goal seasons among active players, with Ovechkin accounting for 50 percent of them.

The Capitals held a morning skate today at MedStar Capitals Iceplex. Joe Snively, who is sidelined with a wrist injury, returned to the ice skating in a non contact jersey. Vitek Vanecek gets the start tonight in goal. Vanecek gets the start after a 19 save effort on Friday night against the Arizona Coyotes for his fourth shutout of the season, tied for the fifth most in the NHL.

The Caps are 44-23-11 with 99 points. Their one point shy from reaching the 100 point mark for the sixth time in the last eight seasons. Caps are the only team in the NHL with an opportunity to collect 100 points six times during that span.

The Caps are 7-1-1 in their last nine games, winning against four of the five teams ahead of them in the standings during that stretch. Those wins came against the Colorado Avalanche, Boston Bruins, Pittsburgh Penguins and Tampa Bay Lightning.
