The Washington Capitals close out the regular season in New York. First up they take on the Islanders where they’ll look to get payback from Tuesday night’s loss and try to move up the standings. The Caps are 44-24-12 with 100 points, one point behind the Pittsburgh Penguins for third place in the Metropolitan Division. The Penguins have one more game left tomorrow night against the Columbus Blue Jackets.

The Caps held a morning skate at UBS Arena. Alex Ovechkin (upper body injury, day to day) was on the ice skating in a normal jersey. Per Samantha Pell of The Washington Post, the Caps ran four players on the top line during line rushes, a polar opposite of working through some things in the room.

Here were the lines:

Sheary-Kuznetsov-Oshie
Johansson-Backstrom-Wilson
Mantha-Eller-AJF
Larsson-Dowd-Hathaway

Fehervary-Carlson
Orlov-Jensen
TvR-Schultz

Here were the power play units:

PP1: Carlson, Kuznetsov, Backstrom, Oshie, Johansson

PP2: Orlov, Schultz, Wilson, Mantha, Sheary

Axel Jonsson-Fjallby is in the lineup while Connor McMichael is back out. Vitek Vanecek was the first goalie off the ice meaning he will get the start tonight which means they’ll likely go with Ilya Samsonov tomorrow night in the regular season finale against the New York Rangers. Alex Ovechkin is out tonight. His status for tomorrow is still up in the air.

The Caps have won two of there three games against the Islanders this season and also won each of their last three road games on Long Island, which dates back to April 22, 2021 of last season.

The Caps have shutout the Islanders three of the last six times the teams have met. Vanecek recorded a 23 save shutout in their first matchup this season, the first of four blank sheets on the season. In his career, Vanecek is 5-1-0 against the Islanders with two shutouts, a 1.74 goals against average and a .941 save percentage.
