The Washington Capitals made a move to their AHL roster by recalling defenseman Vincent Iorio to the Hershey Bears. He set a WHL career high with 44 points this season with 11 goals and 33 assists. He’s from the Brandon Wheat Kings of the Western Hockey League.

Listed as six foot four and 200 pounds, the blue liner was ranked tied for 16th in the league in points among defensemen. The Coquitlam, British Columbia, native ranked fifth on the team in assists.

During the 2020-21 season, Iorio registered 12 points in 22 games with Brandon with five goals and seven assists ranking third among Wheat King defensemen in points. The 19 year old was selected by the Capitals with the 55th overall pick in the 2021 NHL Draft, ranking 27th among North American defensemen by NHL Central Scouting prior to the draft.

The Bears finished the season fifth in the Atlantic Division with a 34-32-6-4 record with 78 points, good enough to qualify for the Calder Cup Playoffs. The Caps will take on the Scranton Wilkes Barrie Penguins in the opening round beginning on Friday night in a best of two out of three.

The Capitals are up 1-0 in the first round against the Florida Panthers. With the Bears in the playoffs, it’s still a little too early to recall black aces. We gotta see how the series plays out but so far so good.

The Caps did recall Zach Fucale from the Bears to the NHL roster though as a third goaltender but so far in the ongoing competition, Vitek Vanecek has seized the latest opportunity, making 30 saves in the win.
