The Washington Capitals tried everything they could but in the end they suffered a first round exit for the fourth straight year. It’s obviously way too early to even think about what the lineup could look like next season. There is one suggestion though, put Anthony Mantha on the top line.

Mantha missed much of the season with shoulder surgery in November but when he returned in early March, his presence helped give the team a spark for a late season turnaround that kept them on pace to get in the playoffs.

Mantha is a big body that brings a physical presence but has an offensive touch. In 37 games, he scored nine goals and added 14 assists for 23 points. If he gets moved to the top line and has consistent production we could see a breakout season from him next year. Not only is he due for one but the Caps would like nothing more than to cash in on this trade.

The Caps gave up a lot for him including home grown superstar Jakub Vrana and a first rounder. Ironically both of their injuries happened at the same time and they both returned around the same time.

I hate to compare the two because they both bring different styles to the ice. But let’s do it anyway. Vrana had 13 goals and six assists for 19 points with the Detroit Red Wings. Again, both play different styles. Vrana has more speed. This comes from playing mostly on the second line.

If Mantha moves up to the first line, he could bring more of that offensive spark that Vrana is bringing to the Red Wings. One thing is for sure is that both players are starting to find chemistry with their new teammates. And they should be even better next year.

Mantha has two years left on his contract before he is an unrestricted free agent. He’s also one of few Caps players under the age of 30. If the Caps want to get younger they need guys in their 20s to step up and having Mantha on the top line could do just that.
