Beck Malenstyn 2021 Report Card
Next up on our Washington Capitals player report card series that we traditionally do in the offseason is Beck Malenstyn. He played in 12 games with the Caps this past season and had a goal in their Nov. 30 loss to the Florida Panthers which was the first tally of his NHL career.
He also had seven blocks, 34 hits and a plus minus of plus two all while averaging 9:03 minutes of ice time.
Other than that he was mostly with the Caps AHL affiliates the Hershey Bears where the left winger had 10 goals and six assists for 16 points in 65 games for 20 points. In the playoffs he scored a goal in three games as the Capitals affiliates bowed out early in the first round too.
It was a good bounce back season for a forward that had an Achilles injury that sidelined him all of last season. There could be an opening for him on perhaps the fourth line as the Caps will be without Tom Wilson for a while with the statuses of Nicklas Backstrom and Carl Hagelin.
With Wilson out it creates an opening for competition. If Hagelin is out too, there will be more openings on the forward front. ACL tears are serious. So are eye injuries. So there will be some interesting choices to make. If the Caps look to get younger, they could always go in house and that’s where guys like Malenstyn can come in.
Grade C-: Malenstyn had a good bounce back season and contributed to the Caps when his name was called. Down in Hershey he killed it. He could use a season like he had with the Bears to build on it with a goal of making the NHL roster out of training camp. We know how severe one injury is. Now we wait for the rest.
