Most Washington Capitals players are either hitting the golf course, working out in the gym, or enjoying time with family. For defensemen Michal Kempny and Martin Fehervary, they continued to get some playing time on the ice for their respective countries at the IIHF World Championships.
Kempny represented Czechia. During the regular season with the Capitals, he recorded six points with two goals and four assists in 30 games while also appearing in 24 games with the Hershey Bears recording seven assists.
Kempny missed the 2020-21 season due to injury. In 2019-20 he recorded 18 points with three goals and 15 assists and a team high plus 19 plus minus rain in 58 games. Kempny has recorded 63 points in 247 career NHL games with 15 goals and 48 assists. He is a native of Hodonin in the Czech Republic.
Czechia won the Bronze Medal with an 8-4 win on Sunday over Team USA. Kempny appeared in eight games. He previously represented Czechia at the 2016 and 2017 IIHF World Championship tournaments when he was with the Chicago Blackhawks. He recorded a combined five points in 16 games with two goals and three assists. He also appeared in three games for Czechia in the 2016 World Cup of Hockey.
Fehervary represented Slovakia. During the regular season with the Capitals, the 22 year old recorded 17 points in 79 games with eight goals and nine assists. Listed as six foot two and 199 pounds, the left handed defenseman led the Caps with 251 hits and ranked seventh in the NHL among all skaters.
Among the rookies, Fehervary ranked second in hits, sixth in blocked shots with 117, and first among rookie defensemen in goals while tied for sixth in points. He also ranked tied for first on the Capitals in games played with 79 and fight in time on ice per game at 19:39.
In the six playoff games, he led the Capitals with 38 hits. In 85 career NHL games, Fehervary has recorded 18 points with eight goals and 10 assists. He previously represented Slovakia at the 2019 and 2018 IIHF World Championship tournaments, recording a combined three assists in 14 games.
In five games with Slovakia in the tournament, Fehervary scored one goal. That goal came on May 20, a week after the Caps season ended, in a 4-3 win over Kazakhstan. It came at 29:47, so basically in the middle of the second period. In the end, they fell to Finland in the quarterfinals.
