The Washington Capitals made another move on Monday morning, re-signing forward Beck Malenstyn to a two year contract worth $1.525 million.
The first year of Malenstyn’s contract will be a two way contract where he’ll make $750,000 in the NHL and $110,000 in the AHL while the second year will be a one way contract at $775,000.
The 24 year old scored one goal in 12 games with the Capitals during the 2021-22 season. He recorded his first career NHL goal and point on Nov. 30 against the Florida Panthers and was one of nine Capitals rookies to score their first career goal last season.
The six foot three, 200 pound forward also registers 34 hits in 12 games from Nov. 24 to Dec. 19, which ranked first on the team in that stretch. In 15 career NHL games with the Capitals, Malenstyn has one goal and a plus one plus minus rating.
With the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League, the Delta, British Columbia, native recorded 16 points with 10 goals and six assists in 65 games, establishing an AHL career high in goals and tying a career high in points.
Malenstyn finished the season ranked tied for third on Hershey with three game winning goals and sixth in games played. He also appeared in all three of Hershey’s playoff games recording one goal.
In 185 career AHL gams with Hershey, Malenstyn has recored 47 points with 24 goals and 23 assists. He was selected by the Capitals with their fifth round pick at 24th overall in the 2016 NHL Draft.
It is likely Malenstyn will spend much of next season in Hershey since his contract is two way and it might be hard for him to make a spot on the roster out of training camp. But if the Caps are just as banged up as they were last year, we could see him in the NHL lineup sooner rather than later.
