We didn’t see much of Washington Capitals defenseman Matt Irwin last season and he might not be back with the team next season as he enters free agency. He had one goal and three assists for four points in 17 games.

Irwin is a 10 year veteran. He previously spent time with the Nashville Predators, San Jose Sharks, Boston Bruins, Anaheim Ducks and Buffalo Sabres. His lone goal came in that big route home win over the Philadelphia Flyers in April.

For players that played in 17 regular season games or more, Irwin led the team in Corsi For percentage with 56.01 percent, an Expected Goals For percentage of 59.32 percent, and a High Danger Chances For percentage of 55.71 percent, per Natural Stat Trick.

Irwin did not appear in any playoff games. He had a cap hit last season of $750,000 on a one year deal he signed last summer. He is an unrestricted free agent this summer. He likely will not be back next season.

Irwin had a stretch in December of two assists in three games, both coming on the road against the Winnipeg Jets and Detroit Red Wings. Although his play on the ice was limited, he stepped up when he had to when the defense was banged up. That’s what you want from a role player.

Grade B-: It is really hard to grade a player that you barely see on the ice but his advanced stats get him above average. He is also a versatile depth defenseman that could play on the right or the left side. With the Caps trying to get younger don’t expect to see him on the team next season.
