Every individual award winner in Washington Capitals history
The NHL Awards have passed and while no Washington Capitals took home any awards this year, some players did get votes. This post will look at every individual award in Capitals history.
Art Ross Trophy: Alex Ovechkin in 2007-08
The Art Ross Trophy goes to the regular season scoring champion and 2007-08 was Alex Ovechkin’s best season statistically with 65 goals and 47 assists for 112 points.
Bill Masterton Trophy: Jose Theodore in 2009-10
The Bill Masterton Trophy goes to a player that shows perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey. He went 30-7-7 that season with a 2.81 goals against average and a .911 save percentage.
Calder Trophy: Alex Ovechkin in 2005-06
The Calder Trophy goes to the rookie of the year and Alex Ovechkin tore it up in his rookie season with 52 goals and 54 assists for 106 points. He scored twice in his first game and easily had the goal of the year in front of the great one himself.
Conn Smythe Trophy: Alex Ovechkin in 2017-18
In the Capitals run to the Stanley Cup, he led the team with 15 goals along with 12 assists for 27 points.
Frank J. Selke Trophy: Doug Jarvis in 1983-84
The Frank J. Selke Trophy goes to the forward who best excels in the defensive aspect of the game. Doug Jarvis recorded 12 goals and 29 assists for 42 points in the 1983-84 season. He also finished fourth in the Lady Byng.
Hart Trophy: Alex Ovechkin in 2007-08, 2008-09, and 2013
Alex Ovechkin has won three Hart Trophies in his career which goes to the league MVP. In 2007-08 he not only scored a career high 65 goals but he helped lead the Caps to the playoffs to kickstart the Rock the Red era. He followed that up with 56 goals the next season as the Caps advanced past the first round. In the 2013 lockout shortened season, Ovechkin led the league with 32 goals. He led the league in goals during all three seasons that he won the Hart.
Jack Adams Award: Bryan Murray in 1983-84, Bruce Boudreau in 2007-08, Barry Trotz in 2015-16
The Jack Adams Award goes to the Coach of the Year. In Bryan Murray’s second season with the Caps in 1983-84 he took them to the playoffs after a second place finish and they made it to the Patrick Division Finals. They finished with a 48-27-5 record with 101 points. It was their first 100 point season in franchise history.
Bruce Boudreau took over for Glen Hanlon in the 2007-08 season around Thanksgiving and helped the Caps rally from last place to Southeast Division champions with a 43-31-8 record for 94 points.
Barry Trotz helped lead the Caps to their second President’s Trophy in 2015-16. They finished with an outstanding record of 56 wins (a franchise best). It was a 56-18-8 record with 120 points. That was also their second most points in a season.
James Norris Trophy: Rod Langway in 1982-83 and 1983-84
The Norris Trophy goes to the top defenseman. The Secretary of Defense Rod Langway won it in back to back years. In 1982-83 he had three goals and 29 assists for 32 points. the next year he had nine goals and 24 assists for 33 points.
King Clancy Trophy: Olaf Kolzig in 2005-06
The King Clancy Trophy goes to a player who demonstrates leadership qualities on and off the ice and humanitarian contributions within their community. That season saw him go 20-28-11 with a 3.53 goals against average and a .896 save percentage.
Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy: Alex Ovechkin in 2007-08, 2008-09, 2012-13, 2013-14, 2014-15, 2015-16, 2017-18, 2018-19, 2019-20
The Rocket Richard Trophy goes to the player who scores the most goals in the regular season. Let’s break down the number of goals Ovechkin had year by year in order: 65, 56, 32, 51, 53, 50, 49, 51, and 48.
NHL Foundation Player Award: Olaf Kolzig in 2000-01
NHL Foundation Player Award goes to a player who excelled in community service. Olaf Kolzig won it in 2000-01 after a 37-26-8 record with a 2.48 goals against average and a .909 save percentage. He has been known to give back to the Autism community.
Ted Lindsay Award: Alex Ovechkin in 2007-08, 2008-09, 2009-10
The Ted Lindsay Award is the most valuable player as chosen by other NHL players. Ovechkin was voted on by his peers for three straight seasons.
Vezina Trophy: Jim Carey in 1995-96, Olaf Kolzig in 1999-00, and Braden Holtby 2015-16
The Vezina Trophy goes to the top goaltender. Jim Carey won it in 1995-96 with a 35-24-9 record with a 2.26 goals against average and a .906 save percentage. Olaf Kolzig won it in the 1999-00 season with a 41-20-11 record with a 2.24 goals against average and a .917 save percentage. Braden Holtby won it in 2015-16 with a franchise leading 48 wins which also tied Martin Brodeur’s record. He went 48-9-7 with a 2.20 goals against average and a .922 save percentage.
William M. Jennings Trophy: Al Jensen and Pat Riggin in 1983-84, and Braden Holtby in 2016-17
The William M. Jennings Trophy goes to the goaltender or goaltenders that allow the fewest goals in the regular season. Al Jensen went 25-13-3 allowing 117 goals with a 2.92 goals against average and a .881 save percentage. Pat Riggin allowed 102 goals while going 21-14-2 with a league best 2.67 goals against average and a .889 save percentage. Braden Holtby allowed 127 goals while leading the league with 42 wins going 42-13-6 with a 2.07 goals against average and .925 save percentage.
