The Washington Capitals have been known to draft talent but there has been some occasions where they missed. On this post we’ll look at the worst of the worst, the top 3 worst picks the Capitals ever made.

This post will look at a combination of what might have been or what never was. These guys were supposed be stars but couldn’t deal with the pressure and the limelight that comes from playing in the NHL.

Basically we’re looking at players that could’ve been Alex Ovechkin but turned out to be like JaMarcus Russell.

#Greg Joly

The Caps selected Greg Joly with their first ever draft pick. The Caps were an expansion team and were looking for a player they could build their brand new franchise around. Joly recorded 92 points with the Regina Pats in the 1973-74 season and won a Memorial Cup championship as the tournament’s MVP. He was even labeled as the “next Bobby Orr” by then Capitals general manager Mike Schmidt.

Joly spent just 98 games over two seasons with the Capitals before being traded to the Detroit Red Wings, where he spent parts of seven seasons with them while also spending time with their AHL affiliate. He scored just 21 goals in 365 games including a plus minus rating of minus 165.
