Next up on our Washington Capitals player report cards is Carl Hagelin, who’s season ended in the worst way possible.

Hagelin now faces an uncertain future in regards to his playing career after a freak injury at practice where he hurt his eye and had to undergo surgery. But this report card will focus on what Hagelin did before the injury. After all, we have to grade everybody.

In 53 games, Hagelin had three goals and 11 assists for 14 points. His three goals were a career low. He also scored an unfortunate own goal but yeah let’s not talk about that.

But Hagelin did have his strengths. He was most effective on the penalty kill. He had a plus minus of plus 10 while averaging 14:14 minutes of ice time a night on a mostly consistent fourth line until his injury. He had 12 blocks and 32 hits but 15 giveaways as he did turn the puck over a lot.

Hagelin did have decent advanced stats. He averaged a Corsi For percentage of 51.70 percent, an Expected Goals For percentage of 50.02 percent, and a 47 percent High Danger Chances For percentage per Natural Stat Trick.

Hagelin didn’t score his first goal until Dec. 6 at home against the Anaheim Ducks. He would then score in a home win later that month over the Nashville Predators and a road win in February over the Montreal Canadiens.

Hagelin didn’t miss a single game the previous season but last season in addition to the season ending eye injury in early March, he did miss time in January due to COVID 19 protocol. He played in just 64.6 percent of the Caps games. That’s a career low.

Hagelin had a bad first half of the season but began to heat up in February potting a goal and six assists including some multi assist gams. He also skated nearly two minutes per night on the penalty kill.

On Jan. 22, Hagelin became the 20th player from the 2007 draft class to skate in 700 regular season games. He was selected in the sixth round at 168th overall by the New York Rangers.

Hagelin’s struggles stemmed from a combination of bad play and bad luck. But his upswing in February was a positive before his season ended shortly.
