Next up on our Washington Capitals report card series is T.J. Oshie, who had a down season in terms of missing a lot of time due to injuries and COVID but when he played he was a beast like always.

In 44 games, Oshie had 11 goals and 14 assists for 25 points. In the playoffs he had six goals and one assist for seven points, easily leading the team in scoring.

In the regular season Oshie’s advanced stats included a Corsi For percentage of 48.96 percent, a 49.81 percent Expected Goals For percentage, and a 51.91 percent High Danger Chances For percentage. In the playoffs, somehow, even though Oshie was tearing it up, he still had a bad Corsi For percentage of 36.05 percent. His Expected Goals For percentage came out to 37.63 percent, and his High Danger Chances For percentage came out to 50 percent, per Natural Stat Trick.

There was something about Oshie similar to Alex Ovechkin where he would defy age. He turned 35 in December but I wouldn’t necessarily blame his down season on Father Time. It was 100 percent injury related.

Oshie’s injury was a broken foot and it kept him sidelined much of the season and when he came back, he wasn’t the same. Before the injury in the early part of the season, Oshie had six points in seven games with four goals and two assists.

There’s three more years left on Oshie’s contract which has a cap hit of $5.75 million. By the time his contract is up he will be 38. It’s a scary thought knowing this core isn’t getting any younger.

It was hard to see Oshie not on the ice much of the season. I love the energy he brings to the Caps on a nightly basis and he’s the heart and soul of that locker room. Not having him around definitely hurt the team and his playoff performance showed that he’s still got when he’s healthy.

Grade B: Oshie didn’t play much but he gets a B primarily due to his hot start and his playoff performance. He hopes to have an even better season health wise next year.
