The 2022 NHL Draft begins this Thursday and continues on Friday. The Washington Capitals will have six selections this year unless they make some kind of crazy trade between now and Thursday.
Let’s break down each selection one by one, round by round.
1st Round 20th: They first Caps selection comes in the first round (Thank God after last year haha) at 20th overall and there’s a lot they can do with the 20th pick. It is likely the Caps will try to find a young center now that Nicklas Backstrom’s status from his hip surgery is unknown.
2nd Round 46th (from Winnipeg Jets): This second pick comes from the Winnipeg Jets from last summer when the Caps traded away Brenden Dillon.
3rd Round 85th: With their third pick, it is likely the Caps will draft forward with their first two picks so that third pick would likely be a defenseman.
5th Round 149th: In the fifth round they will probably go with another defenseman. The Caps usually like to stock up on blue liners and this draft will be no different even though forwards that could make an immediate impact are the biggest priority.
6th Round 181st: The Caps will definitely take a forward with the second to last pick they have, especially if they could find a gem late in the sixth round. That’s happened before for some teams and really if you can thrive in the NHL, nobody cares about where you were drafted.
7th Round 213th: The Caps will probably end the draft stocking up their goalie cupboard. They usually do this every year and this year will be no different. But a veteran net minder is still a top priority for this team.
Those are the picks in each round that the Caps will have in this year’s NHL Draft. Who would you like to see the Caps draft with their six selections?
