#1 Caps will chose Ilya Samsonov, part ways with Vitek Vanecek

The fifth and final bold prediction is of course the boldest prediction on here. The Caps will go with Ilya Samsonov to back up Darcy Kuemper this free agency. In return, they’ll have to say goodbye to Vitek Vanecek.

So what made me go with Samsonov over Vanecek, a couple of things?

Samsonov earned his chance to get that backup spot with his playoff performance. Although the Caps fell short once again, Samsonov wasn’t one to blame.

Vanecek wasn’t to blame either but a bad outing in Game 2 was what did him in. It was a shame the playoffs had to be one last audition as we STILL couldn’t figure out at the time who was going to seize the moment.

They’re both restricted free agents. Samsonov was re-signed at two million last season and will probably command at least $3 million. I also think Samsonov has the edge in that the team had always been high on him over the years ever since they selected him in the first round of the 2015 NHL Draft.
