Two Washington Capitals prospects, Haakon Hanelt and Oskar Magnusson are competing in the World Junior Championships. Hanelt is representing Team Germany and they advanced to the quarterfinals after taking down Switzerland 3-2 with Hanelt scoring in the game.

Hanelt’s goal would turn out to be the game winner and it came late in the second period. It was his first goal and point in tournament action where he has so far suited up for three games.

Hanelt beat a Swiss defender with his speed and drove to the outside before finding the back of the net. It put Germany up 3-1 heading in to the third period.

Hanelt was drafted by the Caps in the fifth round of the 2021 NHL Draft. He played on the left wing of Germany’s third line in all three of their games so far.

Germany dropped the opener to the United States but bounced back with wins over Austria and Switzerland. They are set to take on Oskar Magnusson and Sweden later today at 10 p.m. eastern on NHL Network.

Magnusson and Hanelt participated in Capitals Development Camp last month and are competing in their first World Juniors. The tournament is taking place in Edmonton.

Magnusson spent the 2021-22 season with AIK in Hockey AllSvenskan (Sweden 2), recording 11 points with five goals and six assists in 41 games. Additionally he recorded one assist in one regular season game and five points in six playoff games with the AIK Jr. team with three goals and two assists.

The five foot 10, 165 pound forward appeared in two games for Sweden at the original World Junior Championship last December prior to the tournament’s cancellation. Magnusson has played in 46 games with Sweden at the international junior level recording 19 points with eight goals and 11 assists.

Magnusson was selected in the seventh round at 211th overall in the 2020 NHL Draft.

Hanelt was taken 151st overall in 2021. He recorded 10 points with two goals and eight assists in 16 regular season games and two goals in six playoff games with the Gatineau Olympiques of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) during the 2021-22 season.

The six foot one, 189 pound forward was limited to just 16 regular season games due to a shoulder injury, causing him to miss the original iteration of the tournament last December. In 30 games with Germany at the international junior level, Hanelt had recorded 18 points with seven goals and 11 assists.
