Thanks to a leak from Fanatics, it confirmed what we already knew, the Washington Capitals are bringing back the screaming eagle in the 2022-23 season. This time the return of the reverse retro phenomenon will be in black which will make it “tuff” as the kids say.

The Fanatics post sadly got removed but screenshots live forever. Sportslogos.net mentioned that Fanatics was showing off new NHL T shirts labeled “Special Edition Wheelhouse”. The shirts featured several throwback logos.

On the Capitals we saw that it was a black background with the screaming eagle. It makes total sense and all the dots are connected now.

The screaming eagle comes back once again after the success of the 2021 pandemic shortened season line back when the concept first launched.

This time instead of red, white and blue, it returns to the classic, blue, black and bronze color scheme. That was similar to what the Caps wore in the mid 1990s and early to mid 2000s.

The screaming eagle originated on June 22, 1995 in that color scheme we talked about. Then a few years later the black jerseys came out with the Capitol dome in the background.

On June 22, 2007 the Caps went through a total rebrand that set the stage for the Rock the Red era. Gone was the screaming eagle and in it’s place was the weagle. The screaming eagle made a dramatic comeback in 2020 during the pandemic when the NHL introduced the reverse retro line for the first time.

I remember when the reverse retros came out for the first time. It was pure madness at sports stores across the DMV. Caps fans everywhere wanted to get their hands on the return of the screaming eagle.

We’re expecting the same thing once Reverse Retro 2.0 officially hits the stores. It’s only a matter of time before they officially announce when they’re coming.
