A deep look at the Capitals so far this offseason
The Washington Capitals had a busy offseason. We’re going to look at everything they’ve done up to this point from the draft to free agency.
First the Caps focused on the draft. In the first round with their 20th pick they selected Ivan Miroshnichenko who is a left wing from Russia.
Then the Caps traded up in the second round with the New Jersey Devils. In that deal they traded away goaltender Vitek Vanecek. With the 37th pick in the second round they selected defenseman Ryan Chesley.
In the third round with the 70th pick, the Capitals selected Alexander Suzdalev who is another left wing from Russia. Also in the third round with the 85th pick they took left winger Ludwig Persson.
The Caps didn’t have another pick until the fifth round at 149th where they took center Jake Karabela. In the sixth round they took Ryan Hofer who’s a center with their 118th pick. Finally in the seventh round at their 213th pick they took defenseman David Gucciardi.
Finally let’s look at their other moves. In June they re-signed Brett Leason and Beck Malenstyn to two year contracts. Then they promoted Emily Engel Natzke to video coordinator. They also parted ways with Scott Arniel and promoted Scott Allen to assistant coach.
The Caps decided not to give Ilya Samsonov a qualifying offer, officially saying goodbye to both young goalies. When free agency kicked off the Caps signed recent Stanley Cup winning goaltender Darcy Kuemper to a five year contract. To backup Kuemper the Caps signed Charlie Lindgren.
The Caps also extended the contract of defenseman Matt Irwin to a one year, two way deal. They also addressed the Nicklas Backstrom injury situation by signing Dylan Strome to a one year contract.
The Caps signed their draft picks Persson and Suzdalev to three year entry level contracts. That wasn’t all. They also signed center Henrik Borgstrom and traded for right wing Connor Brown.
In addition the Caps re-signed Marcus Johansson. They also signed Erik Gustafsson to their defense. In addition, Gabriel Carlsson was signed to a one year, two way contract. The Caps also extended the contract of Lucas Johansson.
Wow that was exhausting. That pretty much sums up how busy the Caps were this offseason. It’s only a matter of time before hockey comes back. We can’t wait.
