Hockey season is just around the corner and lot’s of fans are planning road trips to catch their favorite team. If you’re a fan of the Washington Capitals, these are the top three trips you should plan for to catch your team on the road.

Honestly there’s a lot of great options to catch the Caps on the road this season and it was very difficult to narrow it down to three. One game was easy to put down while the others required some thought.

But overall these are the games worth booking a flight for.

#3 Jan. 24 at Colorado Avalanche

Last year Caps fans took over Denver creating a home ice advantage on the road. Colorado is a great place to visit with lots of outdoor activities and you can even hike the Rocky Mountains.

The Avalanche will look different too as some players from that Stanley Cup winning team last year aren’t back. That includes Darcy Kuemper who is now our number one net minder. It also includes former Capital Andre Burakovsky who’s now with the Seattle Kraken.

The Caps won both matchups against the Avalanche last season including a 3-2 victory on the road. They were definitely amazed at the turnout of red in the stands so let’s do it again this year.

#2 Dec. 27 at New York Rangers

If you’re looking for the perfect getaway for the holidays New York City is the place to do it. Tons of attractions, Times Square, Manhattan and the like. The Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty and more. Plus you can check out the lit up Christmas tree over at the Rockefeller Center.

Another reason New York is a good road trip is that Madison Square Garden, “the world’s most famous arena”, is a bucket list destination for NHL and NBA fans alike. Plus if you’re into basketball and are around on Christmas you can kill two birds with one stone by checking out the Knicks game that day.

If you do decide to go to The Garden for a hockey game, just be careful what jersey you decide to wear. We all know how they feel about Tom Wilson.

The Rangers are also going to be a tough divisional matchup. They nearly made it to the Stanley Cup Finals by almost beating the Tampa Bay Lightning in the third round. I was impressed with the atmosphere of MSG last spring and thought to myself wouldn’t it be fun to take a bus or train up to New York for a game.

#1 Feb. 18 Stadium Series at Carolina Hurricanes

This year’s Stadium Series will take place on Saturday Feb. 18 at Carter Finley Stadium on the campus of North Carolina State University. That’s over in Raleigh and when they announced this back in March, I’ll say this… myself and many Caps fans are eyeing a road trip down there to watch hockey in the great outdoors.

The Caps are 3-0 in outdoor games. That includes their lone road outdoor contest in the 2011 Winer Classic between the Capitals and Pittsburgh Penguins. The Caps won that game 3-1 and around 30,000 Caps fans made the the trip up to the Steel City.

The road trip to Raleigh is about a four and a half hour drive from Northern Virginia. Or a quick flight could work too. The Caps live rent free in the heads of Carolina Hurricanes fans. And they were so annoying after they beat the Caps in the first round in 2019 I even called them “Pittsburgh south.”

Wouldn’t it be nice to return the favor, takeover their stadium where they have the “home ice advantage” and deliver another win outside to go 4-0?
