Rookie Camp is underway and we are six days away from the start of Washington Capitals training camp. Next up we’ll take a look at Lars Eller and make some early predictions.

I honestly thought Eller was going to get traded over the summer after the down season that he had and Connor McMichael waiting in the wings for a full time center role. But he might not be ready yet. Time will tell and we’ll learn more a few weeks into camp.

Eller had 13 goals and 18 assists last season for 31 points in 72 games. Although it was a rough season for him, he got hot towards the end.

Part of the problem was that Eller tested positive for COVID 19 twice. Both times on the road and he had to do a lengthy quarantine at his hotel room.

So what can this season look like for Eller? I think he’s the Opening Night third line center for sure. Then sometime in November the team will possibly get a look at McMichael at the center position. If he does well, Eller is versatile and could play the wing.

I think Eller has the potential to score 12 goals this season and 17 assists for 32 points when all is said and done. It’s not necessarily a down year considering Eller just recently turned 33.

I also think that by season’s end, McMichael will seize the center position. Doing so will help improve the Caps speed to the net. You can’t skate out solely veterans and expect to win a Cup.

Most Stanley Cup teams, especially in the last few years, had their fair mix of young and old players. The Caps lucked out in 2018 in a way because many of the stars were in the backend of their prime. Now many are past their prime.

Again, the third line center spot is Eller’s job to lose. He’s there now and likely could begin the season there. Unless, of course, McMichael has a breakout preseason. Then it’s going to be a tough decision for the higher ups.
