The Washington Capitals had a 2-1 lead but coughed it up late in the third period to fall in overtime 3-2 to the Vegas Golden Knights. It was the second straight game the Caps dropped in overtime after losing in a shootout the night before against the Carolina Hurricanes.

Things stared off good for the Capitals early on. On the power play Marcus Johansson struck on some brilliant execution at 3:39. Alex Ovechkin dished it to Dylan Strome behind the net who whiffed it to MoJo right there for a bang bang play.

Jack Eichel tied it at 18:55. That too was a power play goal. 1-1 was the score after one with the Golden Knights outshooting the Caps 11-6.

Things are bad with the injuries and the Caps couldn’t seem to catch a break. The latest victim was Beck Malenstyn who had a huge shot block with the thigh and did not return to the game.

The Caps took the lead 61 seconds into the second period. After Dylan Strome won the face off and Conor Sheary set up a screen, Trevor van Riemsdyk launched it from long range.

2-1 was the score after two with the Caps leading in shots 11-8 in the second period.

In the third the Caps took their foot off the gas pedal and it proved costly. They were outshot 10-4 and the Golden Knights got the equalizer at 14:04 on a goal from William Carrier.

The game would head to overtime for the second night in a row. The Caps couldn’t get a shot off in the three on three while the Golden Knights had two. The second shot won the game and it came from Shea Theodore. The Golden Knights outshot the Caps 31-21 overall.
