The Washington Capitals defeated the Edmonton Oilers 5-4 to snap their four game losing streak and send the home crowd back to their places happy.

This was a complete team effort and unlike the previous games, the Caps didn’t fold under the pressure. That’s a big time win against a big time opponent like the Oilers, who are a very talented offensive team. They showed that last night.

The Caps also showed what they can do on the offensive end when everybody steps up. So who were the top 3 studs from the win? Let’s find out.

#3 Alex Ovechkin

Alex Ovechkin not only had a goal from the office for the second straight game he also assisted on the Caps final goal of the night.

And this wasn’t your ordinary average Joe assist. It was a no look pass right in between the legs to Evgeny Kuznetsov that was even more amazing if you were there to witness it live.

Ovechkin’s goal which came on the power play at 14:36 in the second period was his eighth of the season and the 788th of his career.

He’s now 13 goals from Gordie Howe for number two on the all time goals list. He’s also 106 away from Wayne Gretzky.

#2 Dylan Strome

Dylan Strome had two goals in last night’s game. The first goal came at 18:15 as he forced a turnover and drove to the net.

The second goal came 26 seconds into the second period on the power play as he was positioned in front of the net and got a perfect pass to the middle from Evgeny Kuznetsov. He now has four goals on the season.

Strome’s six power play points are tied with Alex Ovechkin for the most on the Capitals. It also marked Strome seventh career multi goal game and his fourth multi point effort in 14 games this season which is the most on the Caps.

Strome also had an assist on the Evgeny Kuznetsov power play goal which was Kuzy’s first of two goals on the night.

Strome was a good acquisition and I was a big fan of the move over the offseason. He did pretty good on a struggling Chicago Blackhawks team and now he’s on a team that’s determined to win now, despite the slow start that they had.

The Caps power play was four for five on the night and no that wasn’t a typo.

“I think we just found a way to get pucks to the net and they went in tonight. I think we did a good job of screening the goalie and anytime you get a 5 on 3 you want to capitalize on it so we’ll take the win,” Strome told the media after the game.

#1 Evgeny Kuznetsov

The number one stud of the game was Evgeny Kuznetsov who came away with a four point night with two goals and two assists. His two goals were his first two goals of the season and it was exactly the type of game we were looking for in Kuzy. He rose to the occasion.

All four of Kuznetsov’s points came on the power play which marked his first career game where he recorded three or more power play points. He’s two assists shy of passing Peter Bondra (353) for the ninth most assists in franchise history.

Kuznetsov said this on snapping the four game losing streak:

“I felt like we play good but not good enough for wins lately, but this win will give us big breath and we can breathe a little bit.”

Overall Kuznetsov’s four point night marked his seventh career four point game. His four power play points tied a franchise record for most power play games in a single games.

It’s happened 11 times in Capitals franchise history with the most recent one occurring by Dennis Wideman back on Dec. 9, 2011 against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
