It’s the inaugural Washington Capitals vs Pittsburgh Penguins game of the season. Two organizations are pitted against each other in a similar position. Their world-class stars are aging and year after year, the window is supposed to close. But to this point, it hasn’t and both organizations expect to win.

The Capitals are fresh off one of their best performances of the season, a thrilling 5-4 win over the Edmonton Oilers which saw their stars perform for what felt like the first time this season. Meanwhile, the Pittsburgh Penguins may never win another hockey game. The Pens have dropped seven straight, but we’d be remiss to underestimate Sidney Crosby and co.

After a four-point performance from Evgeny Kuznetsov that included his first two goals of the season, the Caps are flying high and the team is looking to build on that momentum.

"“I’m good for another ten games now,” Kuznetsov joked. “Definitely tomorrow morning will be better than last eight mornings, probably. I felt like we play good but not good enough for wins lately, but this win will give us big breath. We can breathe a little bit and coaches can finally show us some positive moments because that’s big when you come next morning and instead look to those mistakes, we can watch some positives.”"

Meanwhile, in western Pennsylvania the vibes are a bit different. Sidney Crosby was recently asked how the 0-6-1 stretch for his Penguins stacks up against other slumps and the captain had this to say.

"“There’s not one that comes to mind,” Crosby said. “It’s up there, for sure.”"

If those two quotes don’t paint a picture as to the team’s mindsets heading into this pivotal primetime showdown, nothing will. This game will be anything but easy, as the 4-6-2 Penguins will desperately look to get back on-track whereas the 6-6-2 Capitals will look to string together back-to-back impressive wins.

Battered and bruised, the short-handed Capitals look to be without Dmitry Orlov and John Carlson once again. Darcy Kuemper was the first off the ice and he will be between the pipes for DC.
