Capitals fall to Flames as more injuries mount
The Washington Capitals fell to the Calgary Flams 5-2 which is pretty bad. But what’s worse is more injuries happened, this time to Martin Fehervary and Darcy Kuemper.
Blake Coleman scored at 18:03 to put the Flames up 1-0. Conor Sheary tied it at 19:26 with a power play goal assisted by Sonny Milano and Evgeny Kuznetsov. Sheary’s snipe came from the right face off circle for his ninth goal of the season.
1-1 was the score after one as the Caps led in shots 15-14.
In the second the Caps were outshot 14-5. The Flames went up on a goal from Andrew Mangiapane at 1:35.
In the third period the Caps outshot the Flames 9-8 but were outshot 36-29 overall. Adam Ruzicka made it 3-1 at 13:39. Mangiapane scored his second of the night at 14:34.
John Carlson scored his eighth goal of the season at 18:54 which was assisted by Lars Eller and Dylan Strome. Elias Lindholm put ht game away at 19:56.
Both Kuemper and Fehervary have upper body injuries. Kuemper left the game with less than four minutes left in the second period after taking an elbow to the head from Tyler Toffoli.
Both players exchanged slashes before Kuemper headed to the bench during a stoppage of play. He pulled himself out of the game because he didn’t feel 100 percent so he wasn’t in concussion protocol by any means.
Fehervary left the game midway through the second period after he was checked into the boards by Milan Lucic. He favored his left arm and shoulder heading down the tunnel into the locker room.
Capitals head Coach Peter Laviolette said that both players will be valued today in Edmonton before practice. They take on the Oilers Monday night. Both injuries happened when the Capitals were trailing 2-1 and then the game unraveled.
Fehervary was spotted after the game with a sling on his left arm. We’ll have more updates later on Kuemper and Fehervary when they become available.
