The Washington Capitals canceled their practice today in Edmonton but head coach Peter Laviolette addressed the media on updates to Darcy Kuemper and Martin Fehervary.

Last night against the Calgary Flames both players suffered upper body injuries in the second period. The likely call up from Hershey in net should be Hunter Shepard. Both players are out tomorrow for their game against the Oilers.

Kuemper left the game with less than four minutes left in the second period after taking an elbow to the head from Tyler Toffoli. Both players exchanged slashes before Kuemper skated to the bench.

It initially appeared Kuemper was pulled for concussion protocols by a concussion spotter but the goalie actually pulled himself for not feeling 100 percent.

Fehervary left the game midway through the second period and did not return after being checked into the boards by Milan Lucic. He favored his left arm and shoulder while heading down the tunnel into the locker room. Fehervary was spotted with a sling on his left arm after the game.

The Caps were trailing 2-1 when both injuries happened. The Caps had chances in the second period to tie it but Dan Vladar was brilliant with 27 saves. Charlie Lindgren came on for the Capitals in relief.

Shepard this season is 6-0-2 with the Bears with a 1.83 goals against average and a .932 save percentage. Last season he split time with both the Bears and the South Carolina Stingrays of the ECHL.

Oshie told the media after the loss in Calgary:

"“We’ve had a next man up mentality for a couple years now but when you have that you need everyone going, you need everyone picking it up for the guys that are out. It seems like when we are not playing our best we do not have that full team effort.”"
